Let’s get one thing straight: I can cook. I have made actual meals before. Good meals that everyone enjoys. I also make a really delicious homemade chicken noodle soup when everyone is under the weather.
But some nights? My kids eat cereal for dinner.
Fight me.
Because Some Nights Are Just too Much
There are days when the tantrums have been non-stop since sunrise, the laundry is overflowing, and the idea of cooking dinner feels like signing up for emotional combat. Or if you are a working mama like me, you come home and you are simply exhausted. You know what doesn’t yell, spill, or require defrosting?
Cereal.
It’s there for me in my time of need.
It's fast. It’s familiar. And my kids actually like it. I myself like a bowl of cereal too sometimes. You can't go wrong.
I Know...It’s Not healthy. fight me
Sure, I could push through. Make the veggie-packed meal and sit through 45 minutes of, “But I don’t liiiiiiiike it.”
Or I could pour a bowl of cereal, add milk, and call it a win. No one cries, the dishes are minimal, and bedtime comes without a battle over peas.
I pick my battles. This is not one of them.
My go to cereals:
I try to stay away from the ones loaded with sugar on the cereal nights. Sometimes they will get a bowl of fruit loops, and they are JUST FINE. I do like these ones though.
- Kix: My kids love this cereal. with a side of fruit.
- Cheerios: I add a bit of honey with a side of fruit.
- Life: one of my personal favorites. it's delicious! with a side of fruit.
These are a few of the ones I try to keep on hand for those nights I'm just too tired to cook. WE ARE NOT SUPER HEROS. It's ok to say, "I don't feel like cooking today'' and if someone has anything to say about it then tell them to fight you. It is okay mama! Eat that bowl of cereal with the babies and enjoy the night :)
